Magne Mahre	24fc7ca4c8	Bug#39932 "create table fails if column for FK is in different case than in corr index". Server was unable to find existing or explicitly created supporting index for foreign key if corresponding statement clause used field names in case different than one used in key specification and created yet another supporting index. In cases when name of constraint (and thus name of generated index) was the same as name of existing/explicitly created index this led to duplicate key name error. The problem was that unlike all other code Key_part_spec::operator==() compared field names in case sensitive fashion. As result routines responsible for getting rid of redundant generated supporting indexes for foreign key were not working properly for versions of field names using different cases. Alfranio Correia	c6d4915f3c	BUG#53452 Inconsistent behavior of binlog_direct_non_transactional_updates with temp table This patch introduces two key changes in the replication's behavior. Firstly, it reverts part of BUG#51894 which puts any update to temporary tables into the trx-cache. Now, updates to temporary tables are handled according to the type of their engines as a regular table. Secondly, an unsafe mixed statement, (i.e. a statement that access transactional table as well non-transactional or temporary table, and writes to any of them), are written into the trx-cache in order to minimize errors in the execution when the statement logging format is in use. Such changes has a direct impact on which statements are classified as unsafe statements and thus part of BUG#53259 is reverted.	16 years ago

Alfranio Correia	bd3aa7eb78	BUG#50312 Warnings for unsafe sub-statement not returned to client After BUG#36649, warnings for sub-statements are cleared when a new sub-statement is started. This is problematic since it suppresses warnings for unsafe statements in some cases. It is important that we always give a warning to the client, because the user needs to know when there is a risk that the slave goes out of sync. We fixed the problem by generating warning messages for unsafe statements while returning from a stored procedure, function, trigger or while executing a top level statement. We also started checking unsafeness when both performance and log tables are used. This is necessary after the performance schema which does a distinction between performance and log tables.	16 years ago

Alexander Nozdrin	b2f8005094	Auto-merge from mysql-trunk-bugfixing. ****** This patch fixes the following bugs: - Bug#5889: Exit handler for a warning doesn't hide the warning in trigger - Bug#9857: Stored procedures: handler for sqlwarning ignored - Bug#23032: Handlers declared in a SP do not handle warnings generated in sub-SP - Bug#36185: Incorrect precedence for warning and exception handlers The problem was in the way warnings/errors during stored routine execution were handled. Prior to this patch the logic was as follows: - when a warning/an error happens: if we're executing a stored routine, and there is a handler for that warning/error, remember the handler, ignore the warning/error and continue execution. - after a stored routine instruction is executed: check for a remembered handler and activate one (if any). This logic caused several problems: - if one instruction generates several warnings (errors) it's impossible to choose the right handler -- a handler for the first generated condition was chosen and remembered for activation. - mess with handling conditions in scopes different from the current one. - not putting generated warnings/errors into Warning Info (Diagnostic Area) is against The Standard. The patch changes the logic as follows: - Diagnostic Area is cleared on the beginning of each statement that either is able to generate warnings, or is able to work with tables. - at the end of a stored routine instruction, Diagnostic Area is left intact. - Diagnostic Area is checked after each stored routine instruction. If an instruction generates several condition, it's now possible to take a look at all of them and determine an appropriate handler.	16 years ago

Konstantin Osipov	ec2c3bf2c1	A pre-requisite patch for the fix for Bug#52044. This patch also fixes Bug#55452 "SET PASSWORD is replicated twice in RBR mode". The goal of this patch is to remove the release of metadata locks from close_thread_tables(). This is necessary to not mistakenly release the locks in the course of a multi-step operation that involves multiple close_thread_tables() or close_tables_for_reopen(). On the same token, move statement commit outside close_thread_tables(). Other cleanups: Cleanup COM_FIELD_LIST. Don't call close_thread_tables() in COM_SHUTDOWN -- there are no open tables there that can be closed (we leave the locked tables mode in THD destructor, and this close_thread_tables() won't leave it anyway). Make open_and_lock_tables() and open_and_lock_tables_derived() call close_thread_tables() upon failure. Remove the calls to close_thread_tables() that are now unnecessary. Simplify the back off condition in Open_table_context. Streamline metadata lock handling in LOCK TABLES implementation. Add asserts to ensure correct life cycle of statement transaction in a session. Davi Arnaut	a10ae35328	Bug#34043: Server loops excessively in _checkchunk() when safemalloc is enabled Essentially, the problem is that safemalloc is excruciatingly slow as it checks all allocated blocks for overrun at each memory management primitive, yielding a almost exponential slowdown for the memory management functions (malloc, realloc, free). The overrun check basically consists of verifying some bytes of a block for certain magic keys, which catches some simple forms of overrun. Another minor problem is violation of aliasing rules and that its own internal list of blocks is prone to corruption. Another issue with safemalloc is rather the maintenance cost as the tool has a significant impact on the server code. Given the magnitude of memory debuggers available nowadays, especially those that are provided with the platform malloc implementation, maintenance of a in-house and largely obsolete memory debugger becomes a burden that is not worth the effort due to its slowness and lack of support for detecting more common forms of heap corruption. Since there are third-party tools that can provide the same functionality at a lower or comparable performance cost, the solution is to simply remove safemalloc. Third-party tools can provide the same functionality at a lower or comparable performance cost. The removal of safemalloc also allows a simplification of the malloc wrappers, removing quite a bit of kludge: redefinition of my_malloc, my_free and the removal of the unused second argument of my_free. Since free() always check whether the supplied pointer is null, redudant checks are also removed. Also, this patch adds unit testing for my_malloc and moves my_realloc implementation into the same file as the other memory allocation primitives.	16 years ago

The mixed statement is about to update a transactional table and a non-transactional table. 2. The mixed statement is about to update a temporary transactional table and a non-transactional table. 3. The mixed statement is about to update a transactional table and read from a non-transactional table. 4. The mixed statement is about to update a temporary transactional table and read from a non-transactional table. 5. The mixed statement is about to update a non-transactional table and read from a transactional table when the isolation level is lower than repeatable read. After updating a transactional table if: 6. The mixed statement is about to update a non-transactional table and read from a temporary transactional table. 7. The mixed statement is about to update a non-transactional table and read from a temporary transactional table. 8. The mixed statement is about to update a non-transactionala table and read from a temporary non-transactional table. 9. The mixed statement is about to update a temporary non-transactional table and update a non-transactional table. 10. A statement is about to update a non-transactional table and the option variables.binlog_direct_non_trans_update is OFF. The reason for this is that locks acquired may not protected a concurrent transaction of interfering in the current execution and by consequence in the result. So the patch reduced the number of spurious unsafe warnings. Besides we fixed a regression caused by BUG#51894, which makes temporary tables to go into the trx-cache if there is an on-going transaction. In MIXED mode, the patch for BUG#51894 ignores that the trx-cache may have updates to temporary non-transactional tables that must be written to the binary log while rolling back the transaction. So we fix this problem by writing the content of the trx-cache to the binary log while rolling back a transaction if a non-transactional temporary table was updated and the binary logging format is MIXED.	16 years ago

This fixes Bug#50589 "Server hang on a query evaluated using a temporary table" Bug#51557 "LOCK_open and kernel_mutex are not happy together" Bug#49463 "LOCK_table and innodb are not nice when handler instances are created". This patch has effect on storage engines that rely on ha_open() PSEA method being called under LOCK_open. In particular: 1) NDB is broken and left unfixed. NDB relies on LOCK_open being kept as part of ha_open(), since it uses auto-discovery. While previously the NDB open code was race-prone, now it simply fails on asserts. 2) HEAP engine had a race in ha_heap::open() when a share for the same table could be added twice to the list of shares, or a dangling reference to a share stored in HEAP handler. This patch aims to address this problem by 'pinning' the newly created share in the internal HEAP engine share list until at least one handler instance is created using that share.	16 years ago

Alfranio Correia	02fc237a2c	BUG#50479 DDL stmt on row-only/stmt-only tables generate spurious binlog_format errors In the fix of BUG#39934 in 5.1-rep+3, errors are generated when binlog_format=row and a statement modifies a table restricted to statement-logging (ER_BINLOG_ROW_MODE_AND_STMT_ENGINE); or if binlog_format=statement and a statement modifies a table restricted to row-logging (ER_BINLOG_STMT_MODE_AND_ROW_ENGINE). However, some DDL statements that lock tables (e.g. ALTER TABLE, CREATE INDEX and CREATE TRIGGER) were causing spurious errors, although no row might be inserted into the binary log. To fix the problem, we tagged statements that may generate rows into the binary log and thence the warning messages are only printed out when the appropriate conditions hold and rows might be changed.	16 years ago

The current approach to this option bit breaks the session variable encapsulation. Besides it is allowed to change @@session.sql_bin_log within a transaction what may lead to not correctly logging a transaction. To fix the problems, we created a thd->variables variable to represent the "sql_log_bin" and prohibited its update inside a transaction or sub-statement.	16 years ago

ROW_COUNT is now assigned according to the following rules: - In my_ok(): - for DML statements: to the number of affected rows; - for DDL statements: to 0. - In my_eof(): to -1 to indicate that there was a result set. We derive this semantics from the JDBC specification, where int java.sql.Statement.getUpdateCount() is defined to (sic) "return the current result as an update count; if the result is a ResultSet object or there are no more results, -1 is returned". - In my_error(): to -1 to be compatible with the MySQL C API and MySQL ODBC driver. - For SIGNAL statements: to 0 per WL#2110 specification. The current transaction isolation level is now established at transaction start. If there was a SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL statement, the value is taken from it. Otherwise, the session value is used. A change in a session value, made while a transaction is active, whereas still allowed, no longer has any effect on the current transaction isolation level. This is an incompatible change. A change in a session isolation level, made while there is no active transaction, overrides SET TRANSACTION statement, if there was any. Changed the impelmentation to not look at @@session.completion_type in the parser, and thus fixed Bug#53346. Changed the parser to not allow AND NO CHAIN RELEASE, and thus fixed Bug#46527. Changed the transaction API to take the current transaction isolation level into account: - BEGIN/COMMIT now do preserve the current transaction isolation level if chaining is on. - implicit commit, XA COMMIT or XA ROLLBACK or autocommit don't.	16 years ago

Kristofer Pettersson	5b6ebdf086	Bug#50373 --secure-file-priv="" Iterative patch improvement. Previously committed patch caused wrong result on Windows. The previous patch also broke secure_file_priv for symlinks since not all file paths which must be compared against this variable are normalized using the same norm. The server variable opt_secure_file_priv wasn't normalized properly and caused the operations LOAD DATA INFILE .. INTO TABLE .. and SELECT load_file(..) to do different interpretations of the --secure-file-priv option. The patch moves code to the server initialization routines so that the path always is normalized once and only once. It was also intended that setting the option to an empty string should be equal to lifting all previously set restrictions. This is also fixed by this patch.	16 years ago

Alfranio Correia	a6d6ac3dbe	BUG#53075 SBR: Strange warning around CONNECTION_ID Statements with CONNECTION_ID were forced to be kept in the transactional cache and by consequence non-transactional changes that were supposed to be flushed ahead of the transaction were kept in the transactional cache. This happened because after BUG#51894 any statement whose thd's thread_specific_used was set was kept in the transactional cache. The idea was to keep changes on temporary tables in the transactional cache. However, the thread_specific_used was set not only for statements that accessed temporary tables but also when the CONNECTION_ID was used. To fix the problem, we created a new variable to keep track of updates to temporary tables.	16 years ago
Alfranio Correia	9ba731c299	BUG#51894 Replication failure with SBR on DROP TEMPORARY TABLE inside a transaction BUG#52616 Temp table prevents switch binlog format from STATEMENT to ROW Before the WL#2687 and BUG#46364, every non-transactional change that happened after a transactional change was written to trx-cache and flushed upon committing the transaction. WL#2687 and BUG#46364 changed this behavior and non-transactional changes are now written to the binary log upon committing the statement. A binary log event is identified as transactional or non-transactional through a flag in the Log_event which is set taking into account the underlie storage engine on what it is stems from. In the current bug, this flag was not being set properly when the DROP TEMPORARY TABLE was executed. However, while fixing this bug we figured out that changes to temporary tables should be always written to the trx-cache if there is an on-going transaction. Otherwise, binlog events in the reversed order would be produced. Regarding concurrency, keeping changes to temporary tables in the trx-cache is also safe as temporary tables are only visible to the owner connection. In this patch, we classify the following statements as unsafe: 1 - INSERT INTO t_myisam SELECT * FROM t_myisam_temp 2 - INSERT INTO t_myisam_temp SELECT * FROM t_myisam 3 - CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE t_myisam_temp SELECT * FROM t_myisam On the other hand, the following statements are classified as safe: 1 - INSERT INTO t_innodb SELECT * FROM t_myisam_temp 2 - INSERT INTO t_myisam_temp SELECT * FROM t_innodb The patch also guarantees that transactions that have a DROP TEMPORARY are always written to the binary log regardless of the mode and the outcome: commit or rollback. In particular, the DROP TEMPORARY is extended with the IF EXISTS clause when the current statement logging format is set to row. Finally, the patch allows to switch from STATEMENT to MIXED/ROW when there are temporary tables but the contrary is not possible.	16 years ago

To avoid unclean deactivation (uninstall) of storage engine plugin in the middle of transaction, additional storage engine plugin lock is acquired by thd_set_ha_data(). If ha_data is not null and storage engine plugin was not locked by thd_set_ha_data() in this connection before, storage engine plugin gets locked. If ha_data is null and storage engine plugin was locked by thd_set_ha_data() in this connection before, storage engine plugin lock gets released. If handlerton::close_connection() didn't reset ha_data, server does it immediately after calling handlerton::close_connection(). Note that this is just a framework fix, storage engines must switch to thd_set_ha_data() from thd_ha_data() if they want to see fit.	16 years ago

Alfranio Correia	7827688f23	BUG#51291 Unfortunate effect around variable binlog_direct_non_transactional_updates BUG#46364 introduced the flag binlog_direct_non_transactional_updates which would make N-changes to be written to the binary log upon committing the statement when "ON". On the other hand, when "OFF" the option was supposed to mimic the behavior in 5.1. However, the implementation was not mimicking the behavior correctly and the following bugs popped up: Case #1: N-changes executed within a transaction would go into the S-cache. When later in the same transaction a T-change occurs, N-changes following it were written to the T-cache instead of the S-cache. In some cases, this raises problems. For example, a Table_map_log_event being written initially into the S-cache, together with the initial N-changes, would be absent from the T-cache. This would log N-changes orphaned from a Table_map_log_event (thence discarded at the slave). (MIXED and ROW) Case #2: When rolling back a transaction, the N-changes that might be in the T-cache were disregarded and truncated along with the T-changes. (MIXED and ROW) Case #3: When a MIXED statement (TN) is ahead of any other T-changes in the transaction and it fails, it is kept in the T-cache until the transaction ends. This is not the case in 5.1 or Betony (5.5.2). In these, the failed TN statement would be written to the binlog at the same instant it had failed and not deferred until transaction end. (SBR) To fix these problems, we have decided to do what follows: For Case #1 and #2, we circumvent them: 1. by not letting binlog_direct_non_transactional_updates affect MIXED and RBR. These modes will keep the behavior provided by WL#2687. Although this will make Celosia to behave differently from 5.1, an execution will be always safe under such modes in the sense that slaves will never go out sync. In 5.1, using either MIXED or ROW while mixing N-statements and T-statements was not safe. For Case #3, we don't actually fix it. We: 1. keep it and make all MIXED statements whether they end up failing or not or whether they are up front in the transaction or after some transactional change to always be stored in the T-cache. This means that it is written to the binary log on transaction commit/rollback only. 2. We make the warning message even more specific about the MIXED statement and SBR.	16 years ago

In the mixed mode, such changes should be written to the binary log in the row format. Note that the issue does not happen if we mix a self-logging engine and MyIsam as this case is caught by checking the mixture of non-transactional and transactional engines. So, we classify a mixed statement where one reads from NDB and writes into another engine as unsafe: if (multi_engine && flags_some_set & HA_HAS_OWN_BINLOGGING) lex->set_stmt_unsafe(LEX::BINLOG_STMT_UNSAFE_MULTIPLE_ENGINES_AND_SELF_LOGGING_ENGINE);	16 years ago

Dmitry Lenev	0ec868ca0e	Fix for bug #50908 "Assertion `handler_tables_hash.records == 0' failed in enter_locked_tables_mode". Server was aborted due to assertion failure when one tried to execute statement requiring prelocking (i.e. firing triggers or using stored functions) while having open HANDLERs. The problem was that THD::enter_locked_tables_mode() method which was called at the beginning of execution of prelocked statement assumed there are no open HANDLERs. It had to do so because corresponding THD::leave_locked_tables_mode() method was unable to properly restore MDL sentinel when leaving LOCK TABLES/prelocked mode in the presence of open HANDLERs. This patch solves this problem by changing the latter method to properly restore MDL sentinel and thus removing need for this assumption. As a side-effect, it lifts unjustified limitation by allowing to keep HANDLERs open when entering LOCK TABLES mode.	16 years ago

Dmitry Lenev	afd15c43a9	Implement new type-of-operation-aware metadata locks. Add a wait-for graph based deadlock detector to the MDL subsystem. Fixes bug #46272 "MySQL 5.4.4, new MDL: unnecessary deadlock" and bug #37346 "innodb does not detect deadlock between update and alter table". The first bug manifested itself as an unwarranted abort of a transaction with ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK error by a concurrent ALTER statement, when this transaction tried to repeat use of a table, which it has already used in a similar fashion before ALTER started. The second bug showed up as a deadlock between table-level locks and InnoDB row locks, which was "detected" only after innodb_lock_wait_timeout timeout. A transaction would start using the table and modify a few rows. Then ALTER TABLE would come in, and start copying rows into a temporary table. Eventually it would stumble on the modified records and get blocked on a row lock. The first transaction would try to do more updates, and get blocked on thr_lock.c lock. This situation of circular wait would only get resolved by a timeout. Both these bugs stemmed from inadequate solutions to the problem of deadlocks occurring between different locking subsystems. In the first case we tried to avoid deadlocks between metadata locking and table-level locking subsystems, when upgrading shared metadata lock to exclusive one. Transactions holding the shared lock on the table and waiting for some table-level lock used to be aborted too aggressively. We also allowed ALTER TABLE to start in presence of transactions that modify the subject table. ALTER TABLE acquires TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ lock at start, and that block all writes against the table (naturally, we don't want any writes to be lost when switching the old and the new table). TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ lock, in turn, would block the started transaction on thr_lock.c lock, should they do more updates. This, again, lead to the need to abort such transactions. The second bug occurred simply because we didn't have any mechanism to detect deadlocks between the table-level locks in thr_lock.c and row-level locks in InnoDB, other than innodb_lock_wait_timeout. This patch solves both these problems by moving lock conflicts which are causing these deadlocks into the metadata locking subsystem, thus making it possible to avoid or detect such deadlocks inside MDL. To do this we introduce new type-of-operation-aware metadata locks, which allow MDL subsystem to know not only the fact that transaction has used or is going to use some object but also what kind of operation it has carried out or going to carry out on the object. This, along with the addition of a special kind of upgradable metadata lock, allows ALTER TABLE to wait until all transactions which has updated the table to go away. This solves the second issue. Another special type of upgradable metadata lock is acquired by LOCK TABLE WRITE. This second lock type allows to solve the first issue, since abortion of table-level locks in event of DDL under LOCK TABLES becomes also unnecessary. Below follows the list of incompatible changes introduced by this patch: - From now on, ALTER TABLE and CREATE/DROP TRIGGER SQL (i.e. those statements that acquire TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ lock) wait for all transactions which has updated the table to complete. - From now on, LOCK TABLES ... WRITE, REPAIR/OPTIMIZE TABLE (i.e. all statements which acquire TL_WRITE table-level lock) wait for all transaction which updated or read from the table to complete. As a consequence, innodb_table_locks=0 option no longer applies to LOCK TABLES ... WRITE. - DROP DATABASE, DROP TABLE, RENAME TABLE no longer abort statements or transactions which use tables being dropped or renamed, and instead wait for these transactions to complete. - Since LOCK TABLES WRITE now takes a special metadata lock, not compatible with with reads or writes against the subject table and transaction-wide, thr_lock.c deadlock avoidance algorithm that used to ensure absence of deadlocks between LOCK TABLES WRITE and other statements is no longer sufficient, even for MyISAM. The wait-for graph based deadlock detector of MDL subsystem may sometimes be necessary and is involved. This may lead to ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK error produced for multi-statement transactions even if these only use MyISAM: session 1: session 2: begin; update t1 ... lock table t2 write, t1 write; -- gets a lock on t2, blocks on t1 update t2 ... (ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK) - Finally, support of LOW_PRIORITY option for LOCK TABLES ... WRITE was abandoned. LOCK TABLE ... LOW_PRIORITY WRITE from now on has the same priority as the usual LOCK TABLE ... WRITE. SELECT HIGH PRIORITY no longer trumps LOCK TABLE ... WRITE in the wait queue. - We do not take upgradable metadata locks on implicitly locked tables. So if one has, say, a view v1 that uses table t1, and issues: LOCK TABLE v1 WRITE; FLUSH TABLE t1; -- (or just 'FLUSH TABLES'), an error is produced. In order to be able to perform DDL on a table under LOCK TABLES, the table must be locked explicitly in the LOCK TABLES list.	16 years ago
Davi Arnaut	be632a2f5a	Bug#48449: hang on show create view after upgrading when view contains function of view SHOW CREATE TABLE on a view (v1) that contains a function whose statement uses another view (v2), could trigger a infinite loop if the view referenced within the function causes a warning to be raised while opening the said view (v2). The problem was a infinite loop over the stack of internal error handlers. The problem would be triggered if the stack contained two or more handlers and the first two handlers didn't handle the raised condition. In this case, the loop variable would always point to the second handler in the stack. The solution is to correct the loop variable assignment so that the loop is able to iterate over all handlers in the stack.	16 years ago
Martin Hansson	2a22dc2e01	Bug#49534: multitable IGNORE update with sql_safe_updates error causes debug assertion The IGNORE option of the multiple-table UPDATE command was not intended to suppress errors caused by the sql_safe_updates mode. This flag will raise an error if the execution of UPDATE does not use a key for row retrieval, and should continue do so regardless of the IGNORE option. However the implementation of IGNORE does not support exceptions to the rule; it always converts errors to warnings and cannot be extended. The Internal_error_handler interface offers the infrastructure to handle individual errors, making sure that the error raised by sql_safe_updates is not silenced. Fixed by implementing an Internal_error_handler and using it for UPDATE IGNORE commands.	16 years ago

Dmitry Lenev	a63f8480db	Patch that changes metadata locking subsystem to use mutex per lock and condition variable per context instead of one mutex and one conditional variable for the whole subsystem. This should increase concurrency in this subsystem. It also opens the way for further changes which are necessary to solve such bugs as bug #46272 "MySQL 5.4.4, new MDL: unnecessary deadlock" and bug #37346 "innodb does not detect deadlock between update and alter table". Two other notable changes done by this patch: - MDL subsystem no longer implicitly acquires global intention exclusive metadata lock when per-object metadata lock is acquired. Now this has to be done by explicit calls outside of MDL subsystem. - Instead of using separate MDL_context for opening system tables/tables for purposes of I_S we now create MDL savepoint in the main context before opening tables and rollback to this savepoint after closing them. This means that it is now possible to get ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK error even not inside a transaction. This might happen in unlikely case when one runs DDL on one of system tables while also running DDL on some other tables. Cases when this ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK error is not justified will be addressed by advanced deadlock detector for MDL subsystem which we plan to implement.	16 years ago

A sentinel is a ticket that separates all tickets in the context into two groups: before and after it. Currently we can have (and need) only one designated sentinel -- it separates all locks taken by LOCK TABLE or HANDLER statement, which must survive COMMIT and ROLLBACK and all other locks, which must be released at COMMIT or ROLLBACK. The tricky part is maintaining the sentinel up to date when someone release its corresponding ticket. This can happen, e.g. if someone issues DROP TABLE under LOCK TABLES (generally, see all calls to release_all_locks_for_name()). MDL_context::release_ticket() is modified to take care of it. ****** A fix and a test case for Bug#46224 "HANDLER statements within a transaction might lead to deadlocks". An attempt to mix HANDLER SQL statements, which are transaction- agnostic, an open multi-statement transaction, and DDL against the involved tables (in a concurrent connection) could lead to a deadlock. The deadlock would occur when HANDLER OPEN or HANDLER READ would have to wait on a conflicting metadata lock. If the connection that issued HANDLER statement also had other metadata locks (say, acquired in scope of a transaction), a classical deadlock situation of mutual wait could occur. Incompatible change: entering LOCK TABLES mode automatically closes all open HANDLERs in the current connection. Incompatible change: previously an attempt to wait on a lock in a connection that has an open HANDLER statement could wait indefinitely/deadlock. After this patch, an error ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK is produced. The idea of the fix is to merge thd->handler_mdl_context with the main mdl_context of the connection, used for transactional locks. This makes deadlock detection possible, since all waits with locks are "visible" and available to analysis in a single MDL context of the connection. Since HANDLER locks and transactional locks have a different life cycle -- HANDLERs are explicitly open and closed, and so are HANDLER locks, explicitly acquired and released, whereas transactional locks "accumulate" till the end of a transaction and are released only with COMMIT, ROLLBACK and ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT, a concept of "sentinel" was introduced to MDL_context. All locks, HANDLER and others, reside in the same linked list. However, a selected element of the list separates locks with different life cycle. HANDLER locks always reside at the end of the list, after the sentinel. Transactional locks are prepended to the beginning of the list, before the sentinel. Thus, ROLLBACK, COMMIT or ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT, only release those locks that reside before the sentinel. HANDLER locks must be released explicitly as part of HANDLER CLOSE statement, or an implicit close. The same approach with sentinel is also employed for LOCK TABLES locks. Since HANDLER and LOCK TABLES statement has never worked together, the implementation is made simple and only maintains one sentinel, which is used either for HANDLER locks, or for LOCK TABLES locks.	16 years ago
