  1. MariaDB and MySQL have identical install methods. In this document we
  2. describe how to install MariaDB.
  3. The full documentation for installing MariaDB can be found at
  4. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/library/binary-packages/
  5. However most documentation at www.mysql.com also applies.
  6. 2.2. Installing MariaDB from Generic Binaries on Unix/Linux
  7. This section covers the installation of MariaDB binary distributions
  8. that are provided for various platforms in the form of compressed
  9. tar files (files with a .tar.gz extension).
  10. MariaDB tar file binary distributions have names of the form
  11. mariadb-VERSION-OS.tar.gz, where VERSION is a number (for example,
  12. 5.1.39), and OS indicates the type of operating system for which
  13. the distribution is intended (for example, pc-linux-i686).
  14. You need the following tools to install a MariaDB tar file binary
  15. distribution:
  16. * GNU gunzip to uncompress the distribution.
  17. * A reasonable tar to unpack the distribution. GNU tar is known
  18. to work. Some operating systems come with a preinstalled
  19. version of tar that is known to have problems. For example,
  20. the tar provided with early versions of Mac OS X, SunOS 4.x,
  21. Solaris 8, Solaris 9, Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris, and HP-UX
  22. are known to have problems with long file names. On Mac OS X,
  23. you can use the preinstalled gnutar program. On Solaris 10 and
  24. OpenSolaris you can use the preinstalled gtar. On other
  25. systems with a deficient tar, you should install GNU tar
  26. first.
  27. If you run into problems and need to file a bug report,
  28. please report them to: https://mariadb.org/jira
  29. See the instructions at
  30. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-community-bug-reporting
  31. The basic commands that you must execute to install and use a
  32. MariaDB binary distribution are:
  33. shell> groupadd mysql
  34. shell> useradd -g mysql mysql
  35. shell> cd /usr/local
  36. shell> gunzip < /path/to/mariadb-VERSION-OS.tar.gz | tar xvf -
  37. shell> ln -s full-path-to-mariadb-VERSION-OS mysql
  38. shell> cd mysql
  39. shell> chown -R mysql .
  40. shell> chgrp -R mysql .
  41. shell> scripts/mysql_install_db --user=mysql
  42. shell> chown -R root .
  43. shell> chown -R mysql data
  44. shell> bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
  45. Note
  46. This procedure does not set up any passwords for MariaDB accounts.
  47. After following the procedure, proceed to Section 2.13,
  48. "Post-Installation Setup and Testing."
  49. A more detailed version of the preceding description for
  50. installing a binary distribution follows:
  51. 1. Add a login user and group for mysqld to run as:
  52. shell> groupadd mysql
  53. shell> useradd -g mysql mysql
  54. These commands add the mysql group and the mysql user. The
  55. syntax for useradd and groupadd may differ slightly on
  56. different versions of Unix, or they may have different names
  57. such as adduser and addgroup.
  58. You might want to call the user and group something else
  59. instead of mysql. If so, substitute the appropriate name in
  60. the following steps.
  61. 2. Pick the directory under which you want to unpack the
  62. distribution and change location into it. In the following
  63. example, we unpack the distribution under /usr/local. (The
  64. instructions, therefore, assume that you have permission to
  65. create files and directories in /usr/local. If that directory
  66. is protected, you must perform the installation as root.)
  67. shell> cd /usr/local
  68. 3. Obtain a distribution file using the instructions at
  69. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/library/where-to-download-mariadb/
  70. The description below describes how to install a MariaDB tar file.
  71. 4. Unpack the distribution, which creates the installation
  72. directory. Then create a symbolic link to that directory:
  73. shell> gunzip < /path/to/mariadb-VERSION-OS.tar.gz | tar xvf -
  74. shell> ln -s full-path-to-mariadb-VERSION-OS mysql
  75. The tar command creates a directory named mariadb-VERSION-OS.
  76. The ln command makes a symbolic link to that directory. This
  77. lets you refer more easily to the installation directory as
  78. /usr/local/mysql.
  79. With GNU tar, no separate invocation of gunzip is necessary.
  80. You can replace the first line with the following alternative
  81. command to uncompress and extract the distribution:
  82. shell> tar zxvf /path/to/mariadb-VERSION-OS.tar.gz
  83. 5. Change location into the installation directory:
  84. shell> cd mysql
  85. You will find several files and subdirectories in the mysql
  86. directory. The most important for installation purposes are
  87. the bin and scripts subdirectories:
  88. + The bin directory contains client programs and the
  89. server. You should add the full path name of this
  90. directory to your PATH environment variable so that your
  91. shell finds the MariaDB programs properly. See Section
  92. 2.14, "Environment Variables."
  93. + The scripts directory contains the mysql_install_db
  94. script used to initialize the mysql database containing
  95. the grant tables that store the server access
  96. permissions.
  97. 6. Ensure that the distribution contents are accessible to mysql.
  98. If you unpacked the distribution as mysql, no further action
  99. is required. If you unpacked the distribution as root, its
  100. contents will be owned by root. Change its ownership to mysql
  101. by executing the following commands as root in the
  102. installation directory:
  103. shell> chown -R mysql .
  104. shell> chgrp -R mysql .
  105. The first command changes the owner attribute of the files to
  106. the mysql user. The second changes the group attribute to the
  107. mysql group.
  108. 7. If you have not installed MariaDB before, you must create the
  109. MariaDB data directory and initialize the grant tables:
  110. shell> scripts/mysql_install_db --user=mysql
  111. If you run the command as root, include the --user option as
  112. shown. If you run the command while logged in as that user,
  113. you can omit the --user option.
  114. The command should create the data directory and its contents
  115. with mysql as the owner.
  116. After creating or updating the grant tables, you need to
  117. restart the server manually.
  118. 8. Most of the MariaDB installation can be owned by root if you
  119. like. The exception is that the data directory must be owned
  120. by mysql. To accomplish this, run the following commands as
  121. root in the installation directory:
  122. shell> chown -R root .
  123. shell> chown -R mysql data
  124. 9. If you want MariaDB to start automatically when you boot your
  125. machine, you can copy support-files/mysql.server to the
  126. location where your system has its startup files. More
  127. information can be found in the support-files/mysql.server
  128. script itself and at
  129. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/starting-and-stopping-mariadb-automatically.
  130. 10. You can set up new accounts using the bin/mysql_setpermission
  131. script if you install the DBI and DBD::MariaDB Perl modules. See
  132. Section 4.6.14, "mysql_setpermission --- Interactively Set
  133. Permissions in Grant Tables." For Perl module installation
  134. instructions, see Section 2.15, "Perl Installation Notes."
  135. 11. If you would like to use mysqlaccess and have the MariaDB
  136. distribution in some nonstandard location, you must change the
  137. location where mysqlaccess expects to find the mysql client.
  138. Edit the bin/mysqlaccess script at approximately line 18.
  139. Search for a line that looks like this:
  140. $MYSQL = '/usr/local/bin/mysql'; # path to mysql executable
  141. Change the path to reflect the location where mysql actually
  142. is stored on your system. If you do not do this, a Broken pipe
  143. error will occur when you run mysqlaccess.
  144. After everything has been unpacked and installed, you should test
  145. your distribution. To start the MariaDB server, use the following
  146. command:
  147. shell> bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
  148. If you run the command as root, you must use the --user option as
  149. shown. The value of the option is the name of the login account
  150. that you created in the first step to use for running the server.
  151. If you run the command while logged in as mysql, you can omit the
  152. --user option.
  153. If the command fails immediately and prints mysqld ended, you can
  154. find some information in the host_name.err file in the data
  155. directory.
  156. More information about mysqld_safe can be found at
  157. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mysqld_safe
  158. Note
  159. The accounts that are listed in the MariaDB grant tables initially
  160. have no passwords. After starting the server, you should set up
  161. passwords for them using the instructions in Section 2.13,
  162. "Post-Installation Setup and Testing."
