I also discovered that we've attached 2 layers of patches to the basic tracing scheme. The first layer avoids jumping to instructions that don't start a line, to avoid problems in if statements and while loops. The second layer discovered that jumps backward do need to trace at instructions that don't start a line, so it added extra lnotab entries for 'while' and 'for' loops, and added a special case for backward jumps within the same line. I replaced these patches by just treating forward and backward jumps differently. ........	17 years ago

Guido van Rossum	00bc0e0a2d	Patch #1272 , by Christian Heimes and Alexandre Vassalotti. Changes to make __file__ a proper Unicode object, using the default filesystem encoding. This is a bit tricky because the default filesystem encoding isn't set by the time we import the first modules; at that point we fudge things a bit. This is okay since __file__ isn't really used much except for error reporting. Tested on OSX and Linux only so far.	18 years ago

I banged on the code (beyond what's in that branch) to make fewer tests fail; the only tests that fail now are: test_descr -- can't pickle ints?! test_pickletools -- ??? test_socket -- See python.org/sf/1619659 test_sqlite -- ??? This breaks a fair number of tests, all because of the codecs/_multibytecodecs issue described here (it's not a Py3K issue, just something Py3K discovers): http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2006-April/064051.html Hye-Shik Chang promised to look for a fix, so no need to fix it here. The tests that are expected to break are: test_codecencodings_cn test_codecencodings_hk test_codecencodings_jp test_codecencodings_kr test_codecencodings_tw test_codecs test_multibytecodec This merge fixes an actual test failure (test_weakref) in this branch, though, so I believe merging is the right thing to do anyway.	20 years ago
Thomas Wouters	c6e55068ca	Use Py_VISIT in all tp_traverse methods, instead of traversing manually or using a custom, nearly-identical macro. This probably changes how some of these functions are compiled, which may result in fractionally slower (or faster) execution. Considering the nature of traversal, visiting much of the address space in unpredictable patterns, I'd argue the code readability and maintainability is well worth it ;P	20 years ago

This will hopefully get rid of some Coverity warnings, be a hint to developers, and be marginally faster.
