The previous implementation used execv(2) to run the real interpreter, which means that you cannot use the arch(1) tool to select the architecture you want to use for a universal build because that only affects the python/pythonw wrapper and not the actual interpreter. The new version uses posix_spawnv with a number of OSX-specific options that ensure that the real interpreter is started using the same CPU architecture as the wrapper, and that means that 'arch -ppc python' now actually works. I've also changed the way that the wrapper looks for the framework: it is now linked to the framework rather than hardcoding the framework path. This should make it easier to provide pythonw support in tools like virtualenv. ........	16 years ago

But after the Py_ssize_t changes, it's at least theoretically possible to allocate a list or string whose guts exceed 232 bytes, and the PYMALLOC_DEBUG routines would fail then (having only 4 bytes to record the originally requested size). Now we use sizeof(size_t) bytes for each of a PYMALLOC_DEBUG build's extra debugging fields. Python 2.4 changed ntpath.abspath to do an import inside the function. This is a depressingly frequent problem, and deserves a more general fix. I'm settling for a micro-fix here because this specific one accounts for a report of Zope Corp's ZEO hanging on Windows, and it was an odd way to change abspath to begin with (ntpath needs a different implementation depending on whether we're actually running on Windows, and the _obvious_ way to arrange for that is not to bury a possibly-failing import _inside_ the function). It could be improved with special case code but we decided it was not useful enough. There is a cost of 12sizeof(PyObject ) bytes per list. For the normal case of file parsing this is not a problem because of the lists have a short lifetime. We have not come up with cases where this is a problem in real life. I chose 12 because human text averages about 11 words per line in books, one of my data sets averages 6.2 words with a final peak at 11 words per line, and I work with a tab delimited data set with 8 tabs per line (or 9 words per line). 12 encompasses all of these. Also changed the last rstrip code to append then reverse, rather than doing insert(0). Ronald Oussoren	836b039b7c	Rework the build system for osx applications: * Don't use xcodebuild for building PythonLauncher, but use a normal unix makefile. This makes it a lot easier to use the same build flags as for the rest of python (e.g. make a universal version of python launcher) * Convert the mac makefile-s to makefile.in-s and use configure to set makefile variables instead of forwarding them as command-line arguments * Add a C version of pythonw, that we you can use '#!/usr/local/bin/pythonw' * Build IDLE.app using bundlebuilder instead of BuildApplet, that will allow easier modification of the bundle contents later on.	20 years ago
